From Milk Tankers to Custom Fire Apparatus

In 1974, four local men with ties to the dairy industry started a business repairing stainless steel milk tankers. Shortly after 4 Guys was established, the company brought in new investors and shifted its focus to building fire apparatus.

The company initially built elliptical tankers based on its original milk tanker designs. As satisfied 4 Guys tanker owners gained confidence in the company, many returned looking for additional apparatus, including pumpers and rescue trucks.

That customer demand helped shape the company's growth. Today, 4 Guys produces nearly twice as many pumpers as tankers. The progression has been gradual, driven by customer confidence and a commitment to building fire apparatus around the needs of individual departments.

A 30-Year Warranty Backed by Customer Service

At 4 Guys, the philosophy is straightforward: keep customers happy and "make it right" no matter what.

One of the clearest examples of that commitment is the company's 30-year warranty. The warranty covers the body, subframe, pump house, compartment doors, and stainless-steel components constructed by 4 Guys.

The company's approach to customer service extends beyond its warranty. 4 Guys works directly with fire departments throughout the design and construction process, giving customers the opportunity to customize their apparatus to meet their specific operational requirements.

Custom-Designed, Custom-Built Fire Apparatus

4 Guys is a custom fire apparatus manufacturer. Rather than producing high volumes of standardized trucks, the company builds each apparatus individually and engineers it around the customer's requirements.

This approach allows fire departments to have a direct role in the design and construction of their apparatus. From storage and compartment layouts to equipment requirements and other operational details, each truck can be configured to meet the needs of the department that will use it.

Customers Work Directly with the Builders

The custom-building process continues when customers visit the facility for their pre-paint inspection. Instead of simply reviewing a finished product, customers can spend time on the shop floor talking directly with the people building their fire apparatus.

This hands-on interaction creates an opportunity for questions, feedback, and additional customization before the truck is completed. Fabricators and finishers can discuss details directly with the customer, helping to ensure the finished apparatus is a practical fit for the department.

Mike Lane, 4 Guys' Production Manager, began his career with the company as an electrician. He describes the value of that direct relationship:

"When a fire company leaves here, they feel really good because they know the guys who are building the truck know what they're doing."

— Mike Lane, Production Manager, 4 Guys

That relationship also continues after the truck leaves the facility. When customers have questions, 4 Guys' production team can often work directly with them to help identify solutions.

Built Around the Fire Department

For more than five decades, 4 Guys has evolved from a stainless-steel tanker repair business into a manufacturer of custom fire apparatus. Throughout that evolution, the company's focus has remained on stainless steel construction, individualized engineering, customer involvement, and long-term service.

By building one truck at a time and working directly with fire departments throughout the process, 4 Guys continues to create custom fire trucks designed around the people, equipment, and operations they serve.
